The Day Sailer is Severn Sailing Association's only one-designed centerboarder for crew of two (although three is OK) with spinnaker and without trapeze. Designed by Uffa Fox, it represents an excellent compromise between ease of sailing and racing performance. While its rig is relatively powerful, the hull is stable and forgiving. This combination of performance and stability has brought about a one-design class which is both competitive and friendly. The class is supported by an active Association and has a comprehensive set of measurement rules to preserve its integrity.
The DS has a powerful upwind sailplan, with 167 square feet of main and jib. This power is needed to drive the stable and solid hull. Emphasis is on clean maneuvers, acceleration, and shifting gears. Downwind, a moderately sized (96 square feet) spinnaker adds to the repertoire of sail handling skills, and lends more speed and planing to the reaches and runs. Class rules permit customization of deck layouts and running rigging, and sail development is ongoing in lofts on both coasts. Most boats employ moderately bendy masts (Proctor Epsilon section) to depower in heavy air. Over 10,000 Day Sailers have been built since 1958 with over 40 fleets active nationwide.
We race five or six regattas per year at SSA. Additional class racing is available closeby from Virginia to Massachusetts as well as a midwinter regatta in Florida. Many of us like to cap of the season with a trip to the VISA Regatta at beautiful Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia the first weekend in October.
While competition is keen, this is a relaxed fleet which is out to enjoy time spent on the water. This class is an excellent choice for both the new racer and experienced hands. We especially encourage big boat crew to get out and skipper their own smaller boat - the one-design experience is a blast.
New and used boats are available, and boat obsolescence is not a problem. In all, the DS represents an excellent value in a one design centerboarder. Please don't hesitate to contact us about the boat.
